Warmer weather is coming! Caring for your dog’s paws in the summer months…

As we approach the summer months it is important to raise awareness of the importance of grooming in caring for your dogs’ paws.
Grass seeds can be a common problem for dogs in the summer, that are most prolific in long grass. Grass seeds have sharp barbed ends that can get tangled in dog’s fur and even pierce the skin, which if left can cause painful sores and infections. In rare cases they can travel under the skin to other areas of the body causing further problems. Irritation from grass seeds can cause excessive licking of the area, swelling and sores developing.

Although all dogs with any coat type are at risk of picking up grass seeds, thicker coat types are more likely to pick them up and be harder to detect. Grass seeds are commonly found in hairy paws, armpits, and ears. Regular inspection of these areas particularly after walking is advised. As well as keeping hair trimmed short to help reduce the likelihood of seeds becoming caught.
Poodle feet is a term commonly used to describe having a dog’s toes (typically poodle varieties) shaved. And although commonly associated with the poodle style it is also beneficial in the summer months for maintaining your dogs’ paws. Shaving the feet of dogs with deep set toes in particular can be beneficial in preventing uncomfortable matts forming between the toes and reduce the risk of grass seeds burrowing into the skin unseen and causing sores. Regular grooming helps to prevent this by brushing out any debris in the dog’s coat and preventing knots from forming. If you do spot a grass seed in your dog’s skin, clean the area, and assess if you are able to remove it either with your fingers or tweezers. If you are in any doubt or there are signs of swelling or sores developing, we are happy to give advice and it may be worth a vet check.
